Yverdon take on the visitors Zurich in the round 38 match of Swiss Super Leageu – Relegation group. The match will be played on Thursday April 22nd at Stade Municipal (Yverdon-les-Bains).
Yverdon-Sport are mostly known for being six-time champions of the Challenge League, Switzerland’s second tier. They did it again in 2023 and, in their return to the Super League, accomplished their main goal — survival. With 47 points, they finished comfortably in 9th place, almost ten points ahead of second-to-last Grasshopper. However, the current campaign brought only 33 points in the regular season. They were level with Grasshopper and just three ahead of Winterthur. After picking up a couple of wins in early March, they managed only draws in the following rounds. A heavy 0-5 loss to Grasshopper proved costly in terms of momentum. Still, they managed a respectable 2-2 draw away against in-form Winterthur in the previous round.

Zürich have been a major disappointment. FCZ are 13-time Swiss champions. Most recently, they ended Young Boys’ dominance in 2022 by claiming the title for the first time in over a decade. Though they couldn’t replicate that success, they collected 60 points last season and edged St. Gallen for 4th place. Their Conference League run ended early, losing to Vitória Guimarães after defeating Shelbourne. They also exited the Swiss Cup in the quarterfinals after a 2-3 home loss to Young Boys. This season, despite collecting 47 points again, they missed out on a top-six spot — finishing behind Lausanne on tiebreakers. Playing among the relegation group offers little motivation, and they lost three in a row in April and May. However, they crushed Grasshopper 3-0, followed by a 4-1 win over Winterthur. Last round, they narrowly lost to St. Gallen, 2-3.
Yverdon surprisingly won twice in early 2024. But Zürich won all three previous meetings this season under Ricardo Moniz. The hosts are seen as slight favorites, but Zürich have looked sharper lately. Back the visitors on a double chance — they should at least avoid defeat.
Prediction for the match: Zurich not to lose (X2).
