Winterthur take on the visitors Thun Sion in the round 18 match of Swiss Super League. The match will be played on Tuesday, December 16th at Stadion Schützenwiese (Winterthur).
Winterthur once won league titles and domestic cups. Now, however, they are a team that spends most of its time in the second division. Realistically, they were expected to drop back down last spring, but they managed to collect 40 points, narrowly finishing above Yverdon-Sport, who were relegated directly, and Grasshoppers, who went into the play-out. This season started disastrously, with just a couple of points after nine rounds. Under these circumstances, Rämmen returned to the post, and with him results immediately improved, including a 4–2 home win over Servette and a 3–1 away victory against Lucerne. That momentum slowed again with a defeat to Basel and a 2–2 draw against Zurich, while a narrow 0–1 loss to Lausanne-Ouchy in the Cup still meant elimination. Even so, recent league results suggest that Winterthur are becoming more competitive and harder to beat. Their ability to score points after such a poor start indicates a gradual stabilization in form.

Thun are predictably losing steam. The Reds are an intriguing club. They have never won major titles, although two decades ago they finished as runners-up in the league and reached the cup final twice. Eventually, however, they even lost their place in the Super League. Promotion was secured last spring by winning the second division, and at the higher level the newcomers initially produced surprisingly strong performances. As late as November, they were confidently leading the standings and leaving all rivals behind. By the end of autumn, though, the team began to fade. After suffering only a couple of defeats earlier, they then lost consecutively to Lugano and Lausanne, and following a heavy win over Lucerne, they failed to respond to two goals from St. Gallen, losing without real resistance. These results point to a clear dip in consistency. Thun now look less convincing in key matches than they did at the start of the campaign.
The clubs had not met in official matches since 2022. However, when they faced each other in October, the current visitors recorded a convincing 3–0 home win over the underdogs. The leaders are losing momentum. Still, even now they should be capable of taking maximum points against such an opponent, so the bet is on an away win.
Prediction for the match: Thun to win.
