Manchester United never really found a true successor to Ferguson. Ruben Amorim certainly did not become one. It was even surprising that patience lasted as long as it did after he arrived midway through last season and dragged the giant into the lower half of the Premier League table. The Europa League gamble also failed, with a final defeat to Tottenham. Amorim was even forgiven for an embarrassing League Cup exit against Grimsby. Still, despite relatively decent league results, he was dismissed in January. United were immediately knocked out of the cup after losing to Brighton, showing that the problem was not only the coach. On the other hand, Carrick, brought back to steady the ship until summer, started in spectacular fashion with wins over City and Arsenal. Yes, against Fulham they only secured three points thanks to a late winner. But at the weekend they produced a calm, authoritative 2–0 victory over Tottenham. Their current form suggests a team playing with renewed confidence and belief. Momentum is clearly on their side, especially against opponents under pressure.
Last season both meetings were won by the Hammers. This time, in December, they managed a draw away from home. The Mancunians are in excellent form and clearly do not want to slow down. We expect another victory from them.
