Wehen take on the visitors Regensburg in the second leg of relegation finals in German Bundesliga 2. The match will be played on Tuesday, May 28th at BRITA-Arena (Wiesbaden).
Wehen tries to hold on to their chances of staying at a higher level. The Red and Blacks were founded back in 1926 but only transitioned to professional football in the 1990s. Over three decades, their greatest achievement has been reaching the 2. Bundesliga for the third time. In previous attempts, they only managed to avoid immediate relegation once, but they went down the following season. This time, it seemed they might secure their place at the level they achieved in 2023. However, a poor finish weighed heavily on them. After an important win over Elversberg and a draw at home with Hannover, they suffered eight defeats and drew with Kaiserslautern. Fortunately, Hansa lost their last six matches and were directly relegated, allowing the newcomer to head into the playoffs. They started away and achieved a decent result, ending 2-2.

Regensburg are a modest project. Nevertheless, in 2017, they managed something Wehen couldn't: not only earning promotion to the 2. Bundesliga again (marking two consecutive promotions) but also securing their place there. On the other hand, they couldn't gather enough points to stay another season last year, dropping to the third division from the second-to-last place. Naturally, they aimed to bounce back immediately to the level they had become accustomed to. However, their play deteriorated in the second half of the season. It seemed like they had overcome their slump, even securing an important victory over a direct competitor, Preußen. But following that, their last six matches alternated between draws and losses, ultimately finishing third, four points behind the competitor they defeated in April. It was fortunate that they drew 1-1 with Dynamo, as Dresden's representative fell just one point short. This left them a chance in the playoffs, which they didn't fully capitalize on at home. The sides took turns leading, ending in a 2-2 draw.
In the 2019/2020 season, both sides played in the 2. Bundesliga, with the Red Shorts winning twice. They also knocked out their opponent in the cup in December, but only in a penalty shootout. The current hosts were not worse away. So, at home, they need to finish the job – we expect Wehen to secure a win in regular time.
Prediction for the match: Wehen to win.
