Verona take on the visitors Cremonese in the round 3 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Monday, September 15th at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).
Verona are unlikely to set ambitious goals. The Mastiffs, of course, remember that they once even managed to become champions of Italy. But overall, this is now simply a team trying to stay in the top division. They managed that quite well last spring, finishing 14th. Though it’s worth noting that 37 points were enough for that — less than one per match on average (for comparison, Leganés were relegated from La Liga with 40!). So far this season, little has gone their way. In the cup they only edged past modest Audace Cerignola on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Then in Serie A they drew 1-1 with Udinese, but were then thrashed 0-4 away by Lazio — and by the 41st minute the Roman giants had already scored three. Verona have now gone five competitive matches without a win, and their defense has looked shaky, conceding ten goals in that stretch. On the positive side, they have shown resilience at home, avoiding defeat in four of their last five league games at the Bentegodi.

Cremonese were already in Serie A back in the 2022/23 season. But then nothing really worked out, and the newcomers were immediately relegated. They only managed to return last spring — and not even directly: they finished just 4th in Serie B, but then won promotion via the playoffs. Perhaps in August the newcomers were underestimated. Especially after returning from the summer break with a 0-0 draw against Palermo in the cup, then losing on penalties. But in the opening league round came a shock: they won 2-1 at the AC Milan on the San Siro! And they confirmed that result wasn’t a fluke by beating Sassuolo 3-2 at home — thanks to a 90+3 minute penalty converted by Luca De Luca. Despite that strong start, they even strengthened on deadline day, signing Jamie Vardy, Jeremy Sarmiento, and Mamadou Fall. Cremonese have won four of their last five competitive matches and look confident in attack, scoring at least twice in each victory. Their squad depth also appears improved compared to their last stint in the top flight, giving them more options off the bench.
The last time the clubs faced each other was in 2023, also in Serie A. Back then, the more experienced Mastiffs took 4 of the last 6 meetings. There isn’t much belief in the newcomers, but they are capable of taking points. Let’s bet on the visitors not to lose this match.
Prediction for the match: Cremonese not to lose (X2).
