Verona take on the visitors Bologna in the postponed round 16 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Thursday, January 15th at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).
Verona are looking very struggling in the majority of their matches right now. Hellas have recently managed to get rid of the “yo-yo club” label, but they still constantly have to fight to preserve their Serie A status. They benefit from the fact that the competition at the bottom is often not very tight. Last season, even with just 37 points, they still managed to finish as high as 14th. In the new campaign, there were no wins at all until December, even in the cup, where they edged Audace Cerignola on penalties after draws but then lost to Venezia in the same way. Only in December did they finally secure back-to-back wins against Atalanta and Fiorentina, but that was followed by a heavy 0-3 defeat to Milan. Yes, there was a recent 2-2 draw with Napoli, but after that they lost 0-1 at home to the inconsistent Lazio without scoring. Overall, Verona’s form remains fragile, with positive results appearing only sporadically. Recent performances suggest that consistency is still a major issue, especially against teams that control the tempo better.

Bologna were traditionally seen as a solid and fairly popular, yet still mid-table side. However, two seasons ago they managed to take fifth place in Serie A. That earned them a place in the Champions League, already without Thiago Motta, who left to coach Juventus. Italiano, who replaced him, struggled in his Champions League debut, and in Serie A the team dropped to ninth place. Still, they managed to redeem themselves by winning the Coppa Italia at the end of that season. This secured a Europa League spot, where Bologna have effectively already guaranteed a place in the playoffs with 11 points. They also recently played in the Super Cup, where after knocking out Inter on penalties, they lost 0-2 to Napoli. In Serie A, after a strong start, they suffered a downturn toward winter, and in that context, a 1-1 away draw with Como looks like a positive result. Recent results show that Bologna are no longer as stable as earlier in the season. Even so, they continue to collect points regularly and remain competitive against teams from the lower half.
In three of the last four meetings, the Rossoblu came out on top, with one victory for the Mastiffs during this stretch. This is an excellent opportunity for the visitors to finally secure three points, and they should take advantage of it. The bet is on a Bologna win.
Prediction for the match: Bologna to win.
