Venezuela take on the visitors Brazil in the round 11 match of South America World Cup Qualification. The match will be played on Friday, November 15th at Estadio Monumental de Maturín (Maturín).
Venezuela is better than usual, but still weak. The "Vinotinto" have long been one of the perennial underdogs in South America’s strong competition. Under Fernando Batista, they managed a surprising run in the continent's premier tournament, Copa America. In the USA this past summer, they won all three group stage matches against Ecuador, Mexico, and Jamaica. However, that was where the journey almost ended, as they drew against Canada in the first knockout round and were eliminated on penalties. Venezuela’s momentum has also slowed in the World Cup qualifiers. Last fall, after losing 0-1 away to Colombia, they went on to secure two wins and three draws in 2023. But in September and October, they only managed draws at home with Uruguay and Argentina, suffered a loss in Bolivia, and, in the most recent match, fell to Paraguay.

Brazil have had their share of disappointments before, with only a handful of successes since their fifth World Cup title. However, the past year has been particularly rough. Last fall, still under Fernando Diniz, Brazil started with wins in September but then surprisingly drew at home with Venezuela and went on to lose three times. In 2024, Dorival Júnior took over, and after relatively successful friendlies, the "Seleção" only managed to beat Paraguay in the Copa America. They then exited in the first knockout round, losing to Uruguay on penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation. In September, despite a 1-0 win over Ecuador, they lost in Paraguay. However, last month, they defeated both Chile and Peru, improving their position in the standings.
The "Pentacampeões" have won six out of their last seven meetings with Venezuela, although their most recent clash in October 2023 ended in a draw. The "Seleção" has finally started winning again. They should be able to achieve success here as well, even on the road against a revitalized opponent.
Prediction for the match: Brazil to win.
