Valladolid were clearly unprepared to compete at this level. The Pucelanos have long been considered a classic yo-yo team. Girona are in just their third top-flight season since returning to La Liga, and fifth overall. But in 2023/24 they shocked everyone by finishing third, behind only Real Madrid and Barcelona, while holding off Atletico Madrid in the battle for a podium finish. However, many of the stars from that magical campaign, including top scorer Dovbyk, departed last summer. Despite bringing in numerous new faces, replacements haven’t lived up to expectations. Coach Míchel Sánchez stayed on, but the team collapsed both in the Champions League — where they lost seven of their eight games — and in the Copa del Rey, crashing out in a penalty shootout to lowly UD Logroñés, with an outfield player forced to play in goal. In La Liga, their decent start gave way to a worrying slump. A 1-1 draw with Leganés, who played with ten men for much of the game, was typical of their recent struggles. They did manage a 1-0 win over Mallorca, but against Villarreal they again fell short, conceding late in a 0-1 defeat.
Girona have won the last three encounters. However, away from home, they’ve only managed one draw in their last three visits, losing the other two. Against a team in this much trouble, Girona should be expected to win even away from home. Back Tsyhankov and co. to take all three points.
