Udinese take on the visitors Fiorentina in the round 38 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Sunday, May 25th at Bluenergy Stadium - Stadio Friuli (Udine).
Udinese once again changed managers over the summer. Clearly, last season’s haul of just 37 points — only two more than relegated Frosinone — was not satisfactory, even though they managed a relatively safe 15th place finish. Costas Runjaic made a promising start to life on the bench, collecting 10 points from his first four matches. However, since then, there has only been one notably solid stretch — between winter and early spring — where they took 14 points from six games. But after that run, their only win came against Cagliari, and aside from a goalless draw with Bologna, they suffered defeat in every match since mid-March. Things hit rock bottom when they lost at home to long-relegated Monza two rounds ago. Still, results are somewhat better than last year — they’ve already collected 44 points, enough to sit 12th in the table.

Fiorentina are also essentially stuck in place. The Viola also made a managerial change in the summer. Vincenzo Italiano left having set a high bar — twice reaching the Conference League final (despite losing both) and finishing 8th in Serie A, earning a European spot. Under Raffaele Palladino, they came very close to a third straight European final. After losing 2-1 to Real Betis in the first leg of the semifinal, they matched that scoreline in Florence, only to concede a decisive goal in extra time. That left Serie A as their only focus. In the last round, they beat Bologna to leap into 7th, knocking their rivals down a peg. But with Bologna celebrating a Coppa Italia triumph, Fiorentina’s current position might not be enough to return to Europe — they’ll need to try and leapfrog Lazio, who are three points ahead (65 vs. 62). Their chances are slim, but they’ll fight for them.
Remarkably, Udinese haven’t lost to Fiorentina in 2024 — both times playing away in Florence. In January, they held them to a draw, and in December, they even snatched a victory. This match may not change much in the bigger picture. But Fiorentina must go for the win — at the very least, to lock in their current standing.
