Thun take on the visitors St. Gallen in the round 28 match of Swiss Super League. The match will be played on Thursday, March 5th at Stockhorn Arena (Thun).
Thun have been runners-up in the country at most — and only once, back in 2005. Moreover, in recent years they had to compete in the Challenge League. The season before last, they managed to qualify for the promotion play-offs, but were defeated there. However, in 2025 they finished first in that division, which allowed them to secure direct promotion. Their rise has been built on consistency and strong results over the past calendar year, with very few slip-ups against mid-table opponents. Confidence is clearly growing, especially at home, where they have been collecting points with impressive regularity. And already in the top flight they have produced another sensation: they are confidently leading the table, having created a comfortable gap from their pursuers. In the previous round, they dealt with Luzern, winning 2–1 and thus extending their winning streak. The team’s momentum is evident, as they continue to grind out results even in tight matches. It is noteworthy, however, that in the Swiss Cup they were eliminated as early as August by modest Breitenrain!

St. Gallen have improved significantly. The Espen managed to play in the group stage of the Conference League last season. At the same time, they finished only 8th in the domestic championship — ending the campaign in the relegation group. This season, however, their performances have been far more stable, especially in matches against direct competitors. They have looked much more organized defensively and more pragmatic in securing points when not at their best. Now they have made substantial progress. The team are clearly behind only their current opponent, and by quite a margin, while being locked in a tight battle for second place. They drew with Servette, but that result also extended their unbeaten run and brought another valuable point. After that, even if not particularly convincingly, they importantly defeated Winterthur. Moreover, they remain in contention in the Swiss Cup — last season they beat Basel 2–1 in the quarter-finals. There is every chance for them to lift the trophy there!
Since the summer of 2020, the teams had not played official matches against each other. Only in mid-autumn did the five-year pause come to an end, and the clubs have already exchanged victories. The newcomers are now taken seriously. With a win, they could extend the gap even further from their main pursuer — and we believe that the leaders of the Swiss championship will claim another victory.
