Switzerland take on Italy in the 1/8-final match of UEFA Euro-2024. The match will be played on Saturday, June 29th at Olympiastadion (Berlin).
Switzerland has shown that it deserves to be at this level again. The Nati continued what was typical under their previous coach, Petković: advancing from the group stage in big tournaments. After the last Euro, Petković handed over the reins to Murat Yakin, under whom Switzerland had another decent World Cup run. However, during last year's qualifying campaign, the Nati elicited either disappointment or concern among their fans. They qualified directly for the Euro, but with several missteps, including a defeat to Romania. Their friendly matches in 2024 didn't inspire much confidence either, as they played to draws against strong teams. At the Euro itself, the team was genuinely impressive against Hungary, surprising them by scoring twice before halftime. The second half was challenging, but they ended up winning 3-1. Yes, the subsequent 1-1 draw with Scotland was somewhat disappointing, but in essence, another phenomenal goal by Shaqiri secured their place in the playoffs. This turned the match against Germany into a semi-friendly encounter, which they almost won if not for Füllkrug’s late goal.

Italy were excellent in the last Euro, and their victory was widely acknowledged as deserved. However, since then, they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second consecutive time, and after changing coaches, they had a mediocre qualifying campaign last year, edging out Ukraine only on tiebreakers, losing twice to England, and drawing with North Macedonia in Spalletti's debut match. On the other hand, the main objective was achieved: the team is back at the Euro, having qualified directly. In Germany, Dimarco made history by setting up Albania’s fastest goal unintentionally. Italy responded with a couple of goals, holding on nervously for a 2-1 win. Spain left the old rival without possession and points, winning 1-0. Croatia, thanks to Livaković's saves and Modrić's goal, almost knocked Italy out of the Euro. But in the last added minute, Italy scored to earn a draw that felt like a victory!
In five of their last six meetings, the teams played to a draw, either 0-0 or 1-1. However, the only exception was the Azzurri's 3-0 victory at the last Euro. Since then, the Nati have managed enough draws to stay ahead of their neighbor in the group. The Azzurri are considered the favorites here. However, their opponent does not look any worse – betting on the Nati not to lose.
Prediction for the match: Switzerland not to lose (1X).
