Sunderland take on the visitors Liverpool in the round 25 match of English Premier League. The match will be played on Wednesday, February 11th at
Sunderland have become the main revelation of this season in British football. The Black Cats had gone a long time without really making headlines. However, ahead of last season they managed to bring in Regis Le Bris, who first lifted the team into the play-off zone and then guided them to victory in the play-offs themselves. What is more, at a higher level the team have not looked out of place at all. They immediately started collecting points actively and winning many matches, eventually staying among the contenders for European qualification. After a couple of setbacks, they managed to beat Burnley convincingly, 3–0. True, they then faced Arsenal, whom they had stopped in the autumn, and this time lost 0–3. On the positive side, they knocked Everton out of the cup, even if it took penalties. Recent league form shows Sunderland responding well after defeats. At home, they continue to play with confidence and regularly trouble stronger opponents.

Liverpool said goodbye to Klopp in 2024, and after such a long and successful era many predicted problems. Instead, there was a confident and early Premier League title win. The squad was then strengthened with several expensive signings, and… defeats started to come quite quickly. Losses to Crystal Palace in both the Super Cup and the League Cup were particularly telling. At the same time, the English side comfortably passed the Champions League group stage, finishing with 18 points and the third-best record overall. On the domestic front, however, slip-ups have been happening with alarming frequency, and the reigning champions can now realistically aim no higher than fourth place. After a series of setbacks, they thrashed Newcastle. But then against Manchester City, despite opening the scoring, they once again lost meekly, conceding a decisive goal in stoppage time. Recent results highlight serious issues with game management late on. Away matches, especially against motivated opponents, have become a real problem.
Three of the last four meetings, including the one in December, produced draws, all of them high-scoring. That December draw was the first since 2017. Few believe in the hosts, and that may be a mistake. The bet is that the newcomers can beat the trophy holders at home, but with a +1 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: Sunderland to win with +1.0 handicap.
