Stuttgart has predictably lost ground. The Swabians made an unexpected leap last season, finishing as Bundesliga runners-up—outpacing even Bayern Munich and only trailing the even more astonishing Bayer Leverkusen. However, they have since suffered a significant decline, worsened by the summer departure of their top scorer, Serhou Guirassy. Their struggles have been evident across all areas of play. Their Champions League return ended in disappointment, as they missed the knockout stage by just a single point. Domestically, they lost the Supercup to Bayer on penalties, and their Bundesliga form has been shaky, especially in 2025, with a string of setbacks dropping them into mid-table. Their first match after the international break ended in another defeat, 0-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt. At least in the DFB-Pokal, they have progressed past four opponents, including Augsburg in the quarterfinals. But their recent lack of attacking fluency—just two goals in their last four games—is a growing concern.

RB Leipzig have been under Marco Rose’s management for quite some time, and despite constant departures of key players, he has managed to keep them among Germany’s top teams. That continued last season, as they once again reached the Champions League knockout rounds and edged out Borussia Dortmund for fourth place in the Bundesliga. This season, however, has been far more turbulent. Their European campaign was a disaster—they lost every game in the newly reformatted Champions League. Domestically, inconsistencies have plagued them, but their rivals have also faltered. They went into the international break sitting fifth, but only three points behind Mainz in third. A 1-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach led to Rose’s dismissal, with young former Thomas Tuchel assistant Lev taking charge. Meanwhile, in the DFB-Pokal, Benjamin Šeško and company have handled their business well, overcoming Rot-Weiss Essen, St. Pauli, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg. Their strong cup form suggests they could still end the season with silverware.
The home side has won each of the last four meetings between these teams—but Stuttgart has claimed both of the most recent encounters. The managerial change should give Leipzig a much-needed boost—they should at least avoid defeat.
