Spain was considered a promising team even before the tournament started. The Germans managed to avoid defeat in regular time, scoring in the 89th minute, but in the final minutes of extra time, substitute Merino became the hero, brilliantly finishing a cross into Neuer's top corner. However, due to accumulated yellow cards, they lost Le Normand and Carvajal for the next match.

France achieved results but lacked spectacle. Les Bleus were considered one of the tournament's most obvious favorites.
