Sevilla take on the visitors Betis in the round 14 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Sunday, November 30th at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán (Sevilla).
Sevilla have undergone a dramatic transformation from a regular member of Spain’s top-four contenders — and frequent Europa League winners — into a side overwhelmed by financial and sporting problems and forced to battle for survival. And this is no exaggeration: last season they finished just one point above relegated Leganés. But now, under Almeida, this is the team that demolished Barcelona 4–1! Of course, that was a pleasant exception, but overall Matias has clearly improved the side. And if there is any kind of battle for them this season, it will be not for safety but for a European spot. In the previous round, however, the defeat to Espanyol brought many supporters back down to earth regarding what this team can realistically achieve. Recently Sevilla have shown more consistency in their pressing and transitions, allowing them to dictate the tempo in several matches. Their home form has also strengthened, making them far more resilient than they were during last year’s struggles.

Betis are showing a stable level. The Cucumbers spent years overshadowed by their more successful neighbours and even dropped to the Segunda. But things changed under Pellegrini — now they are regular participants in European competitions. Last season they even reached the Europa Conference League final, though they were thrashed there by Chelsea. This year the Spaniards are competing in the more prestigious Europa League and are calmly progressing from the main stage. On Thursday, they took another step with a 2–1 win over Utrecht. At the same time, they have not lost ground domestically, even if they have gradually fallen behind the top-four pack. In the previous league round, Antony and company nearly lost to Girona — only a cross from Isco, finally back on the pitch, rescued a 1–1 draw. But in Europe, their own teammate Amrabat accidentally injured their leading player! Betis have recently demonstrated a reliable defensive structure that allows them to stay competitive even in tight games. Their ability to grind out results, both at home and away, shows that their current stability is unlikely to fade in the near term.
Sevilla went unbeaten in six consecutive derbies. But in March they still lost away to the Beticos. The visitors are strong enough to defeat their neighbours.
Prediction for the match: Betis to win.
