Scotland take on Switzerland in the round 2 match of UEFA Euro-2024 group stage. The match will be played on Wednesday, June 19th at RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne).
Scotland will try to perform better than in the previous tournament. The "Tartan Army" broke a long hiatus in terms of championship participation at Euro 2020. However, they did not qualify directly, but through the "Nations League path," and their only notable achievement there was a 0-0 draw with England. Then, they lost to Ukraine in the World Cup playoff, leading to a long-awaited full resurgence. First, Steve Clarke's side won their Nations League group (thus managing to avenge Ukraine to some extent), and then they showed an excellent stretch in last year's qualifiers, advancing to the tournament along with Spain (whom they defeated in March 2023). However, their weak results in friendly matches were concerning, with a lone victory over Gibraltar, and even that was just 2-0. There were hopes that real motivation would help the "Highlanders." In the opening match against Germany, the team completely collapsed, losing 1-5, the biggest defeat of the entire first round, at least.

Switzerland have long been a regular participant in championships, even during Vladimir Petković's tenure, consistently making it to the playoffs. It seemed that Murat Yakin, his successor, managed to maintain the established tradition: the "Neutrals" qualified directly for the World Cup, even finishing ahead of Italy. They also qualified for the Euro in 2023. However, after a strong start, they began to consistently drop points (with the sole exception being a 3-0 win against the bottom team, Andorra), and they ended up losing to Romania. In 2024, they secured wins against Sweden and Estonia but only managed draws against stronger teams like Denmark and Austria. At the Euro itself, they had a successful game against Hungary, especially in the first half, which resulted in a 2-0 lead. They managed to hold on after the break and secured a 3-1 victory.
So far, the "Tartan Army" has an advantage: they have won four times and lost three times. However, in their last encounter in 2006, the "Neutrals" emerged victorious. While Robertson and company might have improved, they are still significantly weaker than this opponent. We are betting on a victory for the "Neutrals."
Prediction for the match: Switzerland to win.
