Sao Paulo take on the visitors Fluminense in the round 17 match Brazilian Serie A. The match will be played on Sunday, July 27th at Estadio Do MorumBIS (Sao Paulo).
São Paulo haven't claimed any major trophies in quite some time — over the past 15 years, the only notable successes were the 2023 Copa do Brasil and the subsequent Supercopa. Last season was fairly solid by comparison, as they finished 6th in Série A. However, the current campaign has been underwhelming. They lost the state championship final to Palmeiras and managed only a couple of draws in the league, suffering multiple defeats. The one bright spot has been their cup form: São Paulo have progressed smoothly in the Copa do Brasil. In the Copa Libertadores, they looked especially strong — finishing top of their group with 14 points. They’re now preparing for the playoff tie against Atlético Nacional. Their recent league win over Corinthians may help build some much-needed confidence going forward.

Fluminense hope to keep progressing. The Warriors made a stunning breakthrough two seasons ago when they shocked South America by winning the Copa Libertadores. However, in 2024 they dropped off significantly, finishing only 13th in the national Série A. This season they were back on the continental stage — but in the Copa Sudamericana instead. Still, they performed well, winning their group with 13 points. They also impressed at the FIFA Club World Cup, reaching the semifinals and defeating Inter 2-0 along the way. Their run ended only at the hands of eventual champions Chelsea — led by João Pedro, who scored a brace against his former countrymen. But since returning from the break, their domestic form has taken a nosedive. They lost 0-2 at home to Cruzeiro, fell short in a tense derby against Flamengo (1-2), and then suffered another defeat to Palmeiras.
In the last five meetings between these two sides, each has won on their own home ground in alternating fashion. The hosts are far from their best right now. But their opponents appear to be in an even deeper slump, and there’s little to suggest they’ll turn things around quickly. We’re backing the Tricolor to come out on top in this clash.
Prediction for the match: Sao Paulo to win.
