Romania take on Ukraine in the round 1 match of UEFA Euro-2024 in group E. The match will be played on Monday, June 17th at Allianz Arena (Munich).
Romania has recently faded into the background. Their poor performance in the last Nations League campaign is a testament to that. However, the team got lucky with their qualifying group draw. While there was a clear favorite, the rest of the group, including Israel and Kosovo, and even Belarus and Andorra, appeared evenly matched. As a result, Edward Iordănescu’s team managed to surpass even the "neutrals" and maintain an unbeaten streak. In contrast, Romania hasn't won a match in 2024. They narrowly lost to Colombia, conceding twice in the last 10 minutes to avoid a heavy defeat, but ultimately lost 2-3. They also drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland. Over the summer, they played goalless draws against both Bulgaria and even Liechtenstein.

Ukraine proved they deserve another euro spot. The "Yellow-Blues" certainly can't claim they had an easy qualifying campaign for the Euros. Their group included real powerhouses like England and Italy. They managed to draw with both, and “Squadra Azzurra” took second place only due to tiebreakers. Eventually, Rebrov's team faced another two-round playoff, which, unlike the World Cup qualifiers, was successful. They played Bosnia in Zenica and Iceland in Wroclaw, with the opposition scoring first in both matches. However, both times, Ukraine secured a 2-1 victory by the end. The summer began with a respectable 0-0 draw against Germany. But then they had a poor start against Poland, conceding three goals in the first half and ultimately losing 3-1. They avenged this with a resounding 4-0 win against Moldova, though they paid the price with another injury to Mykolenko, meaning the key left-back will miss at least the first group game.
Romania won the first two meetings. However, Ukraine triumphed twice in regulation time and once more in a penalty shootout. Recently, the "Tricolor" have clearly underperformed compared to their neighbors. We take the risk and back the "Yellow-Blues" to secure a victory.
Prediction for the match: Ukraine to win.
