It remains unclear what happened to the much-praised Dutch defense in the final group stage match against what seemed to be a far from formidable Austrian side. The "Oranje" managed to concede three goals (losing 2-3). Perhaps the Netherlands were complacent due to their already secured spot in the round of 16. Yes, the performance of the prominent Dutch team in the aforementioned duel with Austria resembled very suspicious capitulation, more typical of a friendly rather than an important match in a major tournament.
