Real Madrid take on the visitors Monaco in the round 7 match of UEFA Champions League – League Phase. The match will be played on Tuesday, January 20th at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid).
Real Madrid are one of the most successful football projects in history and hold a clear lead in the number of Champions League titles won. Several of those trophies were lifted under Ancelotti, but in 2025, realizing that no silverware was coming, the club decided to part ways with Carlo. He was replaced by former club star Xabi Alonso, who had already worked within the system and made a strong name for himself as a head coach at Bayer. However, things have not gone smoothly in Madrid, both in terms of internal tensions and a noticeable dip in results by winter. In the Champions League, after three straight wins at the start, Real Madrid lost away to Liverpool and then at home to Manchester City, despite a dramatic 4-3 win against Olympiacos in between. In January, they were beaten by the Catalans in the Super Cup, which triggered another coaching change. Arbeloa started with a defeat in the cup and only managed to secure his first win in La Liga on Friday. Recent domestic performances suggest slight stabilization, but overall consistency is still lacking. At home, though, Real Madrid traditionally respond strongly after setbacks, especially against foreign opposition.

Monaco made life difficult for themselves. Against the backdrop of a downturn in 2023, the Monegasques placed their trust in Hütter, who immediately delivered by turning the team into runners-up and then finishing third the following season. Later problems, however, were not forgiven, and the Austrian paid the price, especially after a heavy 1-4 defeat to Brugge at the start of the Champions League. Travel issues were cited, but Adi was soon dismissed regardless. On the domestic front, results under Pocognoli have only worsened, and progress there remains limited. At the same time, in European competition the club from the principality have avoided defeat so far, drawing three times, including against Tottenham and Manchester City, and beating Bodø/Glimt and Galatasaray. That run shows resilience, but it has not fully translated into confidence at home. With a demanding January schedule, Monaco’s margin for error remains extremely small.
In the spring of 2004, the clubs met in the Champions League playoffs. They exchanged entertaining home victories. Still, the Galacticos are playing at home. We are backing Real Madrid to win with a handicap of -1.5 goals.
Prediction for the match: Real Madrid to win with 0.0 handicap.
