Real Madrid take on the visitors Atletico Madrid in the round 29 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Sunday, March 22nd at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid).
Real Madrid are far too ambitious for past achievements to matter much here. As a result, despite all of his accomplishments, Ancelotti lost his job at the end of last spring, when, after the Champions League defeat to Arsenal, he also lost all domestic trophies to Barcelona. But Xabi Alonso, who seemed promising and had even shown his class at Bayer, faded here within half a year, starting with a fairly early exit at the Club World Cup and leaving after a defeat to the Catalans in the Super Cup. Then Arbeloa also stumbled straight away, losing his debut cup match to Albacete. In the Champions League, they had to start playing knockout football already in February against Benfica. After getting past them, they then dealt confidently with Manchester City, beating them twice. In La Liga, meanwhile, after managing to catch and even overtake The Blaugrana, they immediately gave that advantage away because of defeats to Osasuna and Getafe. They were also close to dropping points against Celta, but snatched the win in stoppage time. Only against Elche did they manage to cruise to a convincing victory.

Atletico Madrid are going through a very intense end to the season. Los Colchoneros are finally close to a trophy. They shocked many by thrashing Barcelona 4-0 at home in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. And although in the return leg they were already three goals down by the 72nd minute, they still managed to protect their overall advantage, and now they will contest the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad. In the Champions League, the Spaniards reached the knockout stage and then got past Club Brugge. Against Tottenham, they did the decisive work at home with a big win, and then even allowed their opponent to sign off with a victory in London. At the same time, in La Liga they have fallen noticeably behind the two eternal rivals. Even so, they still cannot relax because of the pressure from Villarreal, who are chasing 3rd place. Only in the last round, after beating Getafe 1-0, did they finally move a couple of points clear.
In the last four Madrid derbies, the city rivals have shared two wins each. The Royal Club are considered clear favourites. But they have their own problems as well, so the better option here looks to be over 2.5 goals.
Prediction for the match: Over 2.5 scored goals.
