PSV take on the visitors Liverpool in the round 8 match of UEFA Champions League group stage. The match will be played on Wednesday, January 29th at Philips Stadion (Eindhoven).
PSV struggles to focus on the Champions League
The Farmers made a smart decision by appointing Peter Bosz, who began last season with a Super Cup victory and followed it up by securing the Eredivisie title in dominant fashion. This summer, however, they fell short in the Super Cup, losing on penalties after an entertaining 4-4 draw with Feyenoord during regulation time. More concerningly, winter slip-ups have seen their lead in the Dutch league vanish, with Ajax now catching up. In the Champions League, PSV has experienced mixed results: they opened with a loss to Juventus, followed by consecutive 1-1 draws with Sporting and PSG. They eventually secured victories over debutant Girona and pulled off an incredible comeback against the same side, overturning a 0-2 deficit to win in dramatic fashion. However, they stumbled again with a narrow loss to another newcomer, Brest, in December. Last week in Belgrade, PSV conceded twice but managed to edge out Red Star for the win.

Liverpool exceeds all expectations. The Reds have been under the guidance of Klopp for a decade, with the German coach restoring the club’s legendary status by securing major trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League titles. Surprisingly, Klopp’s successor, Arne Slot, is already viewed as a strong contender to achieve even greater success. While January has seen some setbacks, such as a 0-1 defeat to Tottenham in the first leg of the League Cup semifinal, Liverpool still has a chance to turn things around in the return leg at Anfield. In the Champions League, Salah and company have been flawless, defeating tough opponents like AC Milan and Real Madrid. They extended their winning streak into January with a narrow 2-1 victory over Lille, proving their ability to grind out results.
Between 2006 and 2008, the clubs met across three consecutive Champions League campaigns. While PSV managed a draw at home in their first encounter, they subsequently lost all remaining matches to the Merseysiders. PSV deserves admiration for their efforts, but Slot’s Liverpool will be determined to maintain their unbeaten run, even in Eindhoven. Regardless of the lineup the Reds field, it’s hard to see them leaving with a defeat.
Prediction for the match: Liverpool not to lose (X2).
