PSG take on the visitors Newcastle in the round 8 match of UEFA Europa League – League Phase. The match will be played on Wednesday, January 28th at Parc des Princes (Paris).
PSG reached their peak last season. Back then, the only tournament they failed to win was the Club World Cup in the summer, while once again securing the domestic treble and, most importantly, finally lifting the Champions League trophy with a crushing 5–0 win over Inter in the final. This season, however, things look less convincing. Yes, new trophies were added — the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the French Super Cup in January — but all of them came via penalty shootouts after draws. In Ligue 1, they went into the winter break in second place, narrowly behind Lens, and were even knocked out of the cup after losing the derby to Paris FC. In the Champions League, defeats to Bayern and a scoreless game against Athletic raised questions, and last week against Sporting they conceded a decisive goal in stoppage time after equalizing earlier. Overall, recent results suggest a lack of dominance compared to last season. PSG still create chances regularly, but defensive lapses have become more frequent in key matches.

Newcastle look confident in the Champions League this time. Under Howe, the Magpies had already reached the Champions League before, but despite decent performances, they failed to qualify for the playoffs then. Last season ended far more positively, with a League Cup triumph and a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, edging out Aston Villa on goal difference. This campaign started slowly, but Newcastle have gradually climbed back into the European places domestically. In the Champions League, the black-and-whites have delivered solid results. They began with a home defeat to Barcelona, but then recorded three consecutive clean-sheet victories, significantly boosting their playoff chances. Although the end of 2025 brought a loss away to Marseille and a draw with Bayer, the latest round saw them beat PSV 3–0 at home, virtually sealing qualification for the knockout stage. Their recent European form looks much more stable than in previous attempts. Confidence has clearly grown with each successful result.
The clubs met in 2023. The English side collected four points from six, but it was PSG who progressed further in the playoffs. It should not be a dull game. The pick here is over 3.0 total goals.
Prediction for the match: Over 3.0 scored goals.
