PSG take on the visitors Girona in the round 1 match of UEFA Champions League group stage. The match will be played on Wednesday, September 18th at Parc des Princes (Paris).
PSG have long surpassed the point where domestic trophies bring them much joy — winning them has become more of an "expected program." For a while now, the Champions League has been their true goal, but they still haven't managed to win it. Luis Enrique, who took over last summer, hasn’t succeeded in breaking that curse either. He almost crashed out during the group stage of the competition, but eventually managed to scrape through to the knockout rounds in second place. In the Round of 16, they lost at home to Barcelona and went down early in the return leg in Catalonia — but a foolish red card for their opponents changed the tide. PSG still crashed out, though, losing both legs 0-1 to Borussia Dortmund, a far from elite opponent. Despite these setbacks, Al-Khelaifi remains satisfied with Luis Enrique. Kylian Mbappé, however, wasn’t as optimistic and made his move to Real Madrid. No high-profile replacement has been signed yet, although the club did spend heavily again: €60 million for Neves, €40 million for Pacho, and €50 million for Doué. Domestically, however, PSG remains dominant, as shown by their comfortable win over Brest in the last round.

Girona expectedly slowing down. Girona were last season’s biggest surprise in Spanish football. After their return to La Liga in 2022, they were competitive and even had a chance at European football. However, Michel Sánchez’s team went beyond expectations and led the table for a long time. In the end, they slipped below the two powerhouses, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but still achieved a remarkable third-place finish in La Liga. Artem Dovbyk, signed in the summer of 2023, immediately became the league’s top scorer (Pichichi). However, he has since moved on to Roma, along with several other key players. Girona did sign several new players, including some big names — we'll see if someone like Donny van de Beek can revive his career here. Results so far have been mixed: they started with a draw against Betis and a 0-3 loss to Atletico Madrid. But after that, the victories started coming, though Barcelona quickly brought them back to earth with a 4-1 thrashing.
This will be Girona's first visit to the French capital. PSG is stronger, more experienced, and playing at home. We recommend betting on their victory with a -1.5 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: PSG to win with -1.5 goals.
