PSG take on the visitors Aston Villa in the first leg of UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. The match will be played on Wednesday, April 9th at Park de Princes (Paris).
PSG face virtually no competition domestically. They dominate the French scene, collecting titles with ease. Nothing has changed under Luis Enrique — having secured all domestic trophies in 2024, he clearly aims to repeat that feat this season with minimal effort. However, his main task has always been to finally bring home the coveted Champions League trophy. So far, only Thomas Tuchel managed to lead them to the final — which they lost. With Enrique, PSG reached the semi-finals last time out after knocking out Barcelona. This season began with several disappointing results, but the French giants recovered to make it into the knockout stage. There, they crushed debutants Brest in both legs and then stunned Liverpool. After losing 0-1 at home, PSG pulled off a famous win at Anfield and advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout, where Donnarumma proved to be the hero once again.

Aston Villa have impressed on the European stage. Like most of Unai Emery’s teams, the Villans have shown their best form in European competitions. Taking charge midway through the 2022–23 season, Emery lifted Villa from mid-table to 7th place, securing a spot in the Europa Conference League. That European run — stretching from summer qualifiers to spring knockouts — didn’t prevent them from beating Tottenham to 4th place in the Premier League. That achievement earned them a Champions League berth, though balancing both competitions has taken a toll on their domestic form this season, with Villa struggling for consistency in the league despite remaining in the hunt for the top four. Still, Emery’s men enjoyed a successful debut in the Champions League. They won five games and collected 16 points in the group stage, qualifying directly for the Round of 16. There, they made light work of Club Brugge, scoring three goals both home and away. But now, they face a far more experienced and dangerous opponent in PSG.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. The French side are clear favourites. However, both Luis Enrique and Unai Emery are known for their pragmatic approach, so we don’t expect a high-scoring affair — take under 3.0 total goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 3.0 scored goals.
