Poland take on Netherlands in the round 1 match of UEFA Euro-2024 in group D. The match will be played on Sunday, June 16th at Volksparkstadion (Hamburg).
Poland's national team, known as "Kadra," has followed a somewhat familiar script to qualify for the tournament. Despite their efforts, they ended up repeating the same pattern they followed before the World Cup in Qatar. Once again, a local coach had to step in after the Portuguese manager failed to deliver, and the team only secured their spot through the playoffs. This time, Fernando Santos was dismissed rather quickly, and even under the new coach Probierz, the team continued to face setbacks. Poland's qualification campaign ended with them trailing not only behind the Czech Republic but also Albania, and they even failed to defeat Moldova. However, they managed to perform well in the playoff matches in March: first, they crushed Estonia at home, and in the decisive match in Cardiff, they ousted Wales on penalties. The summer training camp started with a strong performance, scoring three goals in half an hour against Ukraine, although they lost Milik in the process. They also won against Turkey, 2-1, but Swiderski got injured, and Lewandowski suffered a serious injury, although he remains with the team.

The Netherlands have been delivering results that are fairly predictable. The "Oranje" had a good chance to replicate their 2014 World Cup performance in Qatar, where they, under the same manager Louis van Gaal, finished as bronze medalists. However, in the quarterfinals, despite staging a comeback to draw against Argentina, they eventually lost on penalties to the future champions. After that, Louis handed over the reins to Ronald Koeman. On one hand, Koeman managed to guide the Dutch to the Euro (just as he did for the previous tournament). On the other hand, his team showed a lack of teeth against top teams: they lost twice to France in the qualifiers, and their "home" final round of the Nations League ended in defeats to Croatia and Italy. Even in the spring, Germany beat their neighbors in friendly matches. However, the team showed 100% results against weaker opponents – Greece and Ireland in 2023, and Scotland and Canada in friendlies (both of whom they thrashed 4-0). They also scored four times without conceding against Iceland.
The last time Poland won against the Netherlands was in 1979. In 6 out of the last 7 encounters, the "Oranje" emerged victorious. Poland has shown improvement, but they are still weaker, and they've lost several key attacking players. The prediction is for the Netherlands to win with a handicap of "-1 goal."
Prediction for the match: Netherlands to win with -1.0 handicap.
