Petrocub have been gradually approaching the pinnacle of national football. Initially, the recently revived project won the "bronze" three times, the last time in 2019, also securing their first trophy, the cup. They then finished as runners-up three times, only losing to "Sheriff." Finally, in the 2023/2024 season, they managed to defeat the perennial favorites. Moreover, the club completed a "golden double," adding the cup as well. Petrocub also has experience in European competitions, having passed two opponents in the 2022 Conference League qualifiers. However, last season they suffered a 0-5 defeat over two matches against Maccabi (Tel Aviv). This time, they neither scored nor conceded, despite having to travel to distant Shymkent.

Ordabasy hasn't benefited much from their game rhythm yet. The "White-Blues" won the Kazakhstan Cup in 2011 and 2012. However, last year was a breakthrough for them. Much like their Moldovan opponents, the club managed to displace the usual, long-standing favorites from the top. Currently, they are managing to hold onto first place alone, although the lead isn't significant enough to relax and fully focus on the European arena. In previous campaigns, the Kazakhs only twice managed to knock out the first opponent but then soon exited after the next round. This time, they at least managed not to lose or concede. Even though a 0-0 home draw isn't strategically convenient, they still need to win for overall success.
Of course, these underdogs played each other for the first time. It's unlikely that the second leg will be more spectacular than the first, as there's a lot at stake for these debutant pairs.
