Peterborough are trying to recover after a disastrous start. The Posh have, in recent years, even managed to break into the Championship on several occasions. They also won the EFL Trophy for two consecutive seasons. Yet they finished only 18th in League One. And now they found themselves sitting in the relegation zone. This led to the dismissal of Darren Ferguson (the son of Sir Alex) once again. This time, the Scotsman lasted from 2023 until the end of October. The managerial change worked: under Luke Williams they beat Cardiff in the cup and crushed Wimbledon 5–0 in the previous league round. Even so, United, with 13 points, remain effectively level at the bottom with several other struggling sides. Recent matches have shown more energy and confidence from Peterborough, but their inconsistency still prevents them from climbing out of danger. The team has begun to create more scoring chances, yet their defensive lapses make any progress fragile.

Stockport not so long ago went through a prolonged decline, spending more than a decade at a virtually non-professional level. In 2019 they won the sixth division, three years later the fifth, and in 2024 they claimed the League Two title. Moreover, they came close to finishing second in League One but were overtaken by fellow newcomers Wrexham, who collected five more points (92 against 87). In the play-offs they drew both legs but lost to Leyton Orient on penalties. Despite that disappointment, Dave Challinor retained his position as manager, which he has held since 2021 — and it proved the right decision. This season they improved further, even climbing into the lead. However, after four straight league wins (and a 3–1 away victory over Tranmere Rovers in the cup), they received a reality check with a 0–3 defeat to Luton in the latest round. Still, despite that setback, they managed to remain at the top of the division standings. Stockport’s overall form suggests they react well after losses and quickly regain control over matches. Their attacking output has been among the most stable in the league, which helps them maintain pressure on all rivals.
Peterborough previously had a decent record in direct encounters. But when they finally met again for the first time since 2010, last season they collected only one point across the two fixtures of 2024/2025. It is unlikely that much will change in the new season. One of the leaders should secure another victory — although we will take the safer option with a 0 handicap.
