Osasuna take on the visitors Atletico Madrid in the round 36 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Tuesday, May 12th at Estadio de Balaídos (Vigo).
Osasuna were not long ago considered one of Spain’s classic “yo-yo clubs.” Jagoba Arrasate started his work with them in the Segunda División and eventually led the club to the UEFA Europa Conference League. However, Osasuna failed to get through qualification back then and also declined domestically, which led to Arrasate’s departure in 2024. Even without him, though, they only lost 8th place to Rayo Vallecano on tiebreakers despite finishing level on points. Osasuna’s recent form has been inconsistent, especially in attack, where the team has struggled to create enough clear chances against organized opponents. At the same time, they still remain dangerous at home and regularly make life difficult for stronger clubs in Pamplona. Now, under Alessio Lisci, they are once again trying to reach at least the Conference League, although their results have been highly contradictory and far from impressive. During the spring stretch they managed to beat only Girona FC and, more recently, Sevilla FC. After that they lost not only to FC Barcelona, but also to relegation-threatened newcomers Levante UD.

Atlético Madrid have practically given up on La Liga. “Los Colchoneros” achieved plenty during their record-long partnership with Diego Simeone, but trophies have been missing for far too long. That is why it was hardly surprising that, after twice eliminating FC Barcelona in knockout competitions — both times by building a huge first-leg advantage before allowing themselves to lose the return game — Atlético shifted their full focus toward cup tournaments. Atlético’s away performances have become noticeably less reliable in recent weeks, especially against compact and disciplined teams capable of slowing the tempo down. Still, the Madrid side continues to create enough scoring opportunities in most matches and rarely goes completely quiet offensively. In the Copa del Rey final, despite entering as clear favorites, they lost on penalties to Real Sociedad — and deservedly so, as the Basque side led twice during regular time. In the UEFA Champions League they faced Arsenal FC, another side that faded during the spring. That tie was decided by a single goal in favor of the English club after a 0-1 defeat in London following a draw at home. Meanwhile, in La Liga, too many losses combined with the surprising consistency of Villarreal CF caused Atlético to lose third place in the standings. Last round, after beating Valencia CF, they failed to answer RC Celta de Vigo’s only goal at home and ended up losing again.
In the last four meetings, Osasuna and the Madrid giants have strictly alternated victories. Atlético are viewed as slight underdogs here, even if only nominally. However, they clearly do not want to lose again, so backing “Both Teams To Score” looks like the best option.
