Nigeria take on the visitors D.R. Congo in a World Cup 2026 qualification match. The match will be played on Sunday, November 16th at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah (Rabat).
Nigeria are a historic giant of African football with a long list of achievements. They still have stars in their ranks, including world-class talent, which keeps them among the continent’s strongest teams. But setbacks are inevitable, and they nearly collapsed in the current qualification campaign. It was one thing to concede first place to South Africa, who collected one point more. But they secured second only because an unexpected competitor, Benin, faltered at the end. As a result, both teams finished on 17 points, yet Nigeria ended higher in the group table due to tiebreakers and advanced to the playoffs. There, they squandered their advantage against Gabon, conceding the 1-1 equalizer in the 89th minute. But in extra time they redeemed themselves with three more goals. Additionally, Nigeria’s form throughout the campaign has been extremely uneven, alternating between convincing performances and inexplicable drops in intensity. Their recent matches suggest that while they are capable of dominating phases of play, maintaining stability across full 90-minute stretches remains their biggest challenge.

DR Congo understand that their next opportunity may not come again anytime soon. The “Leopards” have never played at a World Cup. Even at the continental level their major successes came half a century ago — they won AFCON in 1968 and 1974 and have not repeated that feat since. But there has been noticeable progress recently. In the most recent African tournament they finished fourth, having not even qualified for the previous edition. And most importantly, in the current qualifiers they collected 22 points — for comparison, South Africa won their group with 18. However, Senegal were present here, sending DR Congo to second place and, therefore, to the playoffs. There, they scraped out a victory over Cameroon thanks to Mbemba’s lone goal in the 91st minute. Moreover, DR Congo have shown strong discipline in tight matches, often relying on compact defending to limit opponents’ chances. Their ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations has been a key factor in their successful qualifying run.
The “Super Eagles” won the first four matches between the sides. But in 2015 the Congolese finally claimed a victory, and three years later the teams played their first-ever draw. Such an important, decisive match is unlikely to be spectacular — expect a “total under 2.0 goals.”
Prediction for the match: Under 2.0 scored goals.
