On the other hand, they recently edged past Aston Villa in the FA Cup, not without controversy. Meanwhile, the drop in the Premier League compared to last spring’s fifth-place finish is obvious. Nevertheless, the battle for a European spot continues. Still, they lost to their most recent opponents, both City and Everton.

Manchester United once again changed their head coach in the middle of the season. The Red Devils did the same back in 2024/2025. Under Ruben Amorim, domestic problems only intensified, and in the Europa League, having reached the final, they lost there to Tottenham. Even so, in the new season the Portuguese manager lasted until January, keeping his job even after the humiliating League Cup exit to semi-professional Grimsby. Their overall form during that spell was erratic, with brief positive runs quickly undone by disappointing performances. Confidence appeared fragile, especially in away fixtures, where results often failed to match expectations. The fact that, after his dismissal, there was another cup setback against Brighton suggests that the problem was not only, or even mainly, about the manager. On the other hand, Carrick, who returned to the project until the summer, started with wins over City and Arsenal, as well as Fulham and Tottenham. Against West Ham, however, they only rescued a draw thanks to a 90+ minute goal by Šeško. After that, they were winning again, albeit rather narrowly: 1–0 against Everton and 2–1 versus Crystal Palace.
Last season the Black-and-Whites won twice. But in December they lost 0–1 away at United. The pair is considered almost equal, with United even formally remaining the underdog. However, they are in good form under Carrick — we expect them to win with a 0 handicap.
