Newcastle take on the visitors Fulham in quarterfinal match of English Football League Cup. The match will be played on Wednesday, December 17th at St. James' Park (Newcastle).
Newcastle have faced significant difficulties. The Magpies have already achieved quite a lot under Howe. They have qualified for the Champions League, although the first attempt was unsuccessful, as the English side failed to get out of the group and also lost momentum domestically. Last season they won the League Cup, their first trophy in a long time, and also managed to finish 5th in the Premier League, edging Aston Villa on tiebreakers with equal points. This time, things are going better in the Champions League, even though defeats have also occurred. They played an entertaining 2–2 draw against Bayer. However, on the domestic front there has been a noticeable downturn. Even after showing some improvement, Newcastle are still sitting relatively low in the table. The recent run of results in the league has been inconsistent, with points dropped too often. At home, though, Newcastle are under pressure to respond after the latest setback and usually try to raise the tempo.

Fulham under Marco Silva have stopped dropping back into the Championship. At the same time, they have not really grown into something bigger in terms of ambitions, not seriously challenging for a return to European competitions. Last season they collected 54 points and finished 11th in the final standings. This season they are not even managing that level so far, with about half of their matches ending in defeats, although on the other hand they still have enough points not to look too often towards the relegation zone. This is especially true after their victory over Burnley in the previous round. In the League Cup, they also enjoyed a favorable run for a long time. Their opponents there were Bristol City, Cambridge, and Wycombe, so it is no surprise that Fulham reached the quarter-finals. Moreover, against the latter they drew the match and advanced after winning the penalty shootout. Recently, Fulham’s form has been uneven, alternating wins and losses. Away from home, they often focus on containment, which does not always bring consistent results.
After six consecutive defeats, last season the Cottagers won both matches. However, in October they lost here at St James’ Park 1–2. Howe cannot afford another slip-up after the setback against the Black Cats. We are backing a home win for the Black and Whites.
Prediction for the match: Newcastle to win.
