Netherlands vs Japan Prediction 14 June 2026

While the Dutch enter the tournament as favorites, Japan's recent form suggests they are more than capable of causing problems for any opponent.

The Netherlands progressed through qualifying without major difficulties, finishing top of their group ahead of Poland, Finland, Lithuania, and Malta. Ronald Koeman's side won six of eight matches and remained unbeaten against all opponents except for two draws with Poland. Their World Cup preparations were less convincing on paper, however. The Dutch suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Algeria before edging Uzbekistan 2-1. Despite those mixed results, their overall performances were encouraging, as they consistently controlled possession, created numerous chances, and generated plenty of shots on goal.

One potential issue for the Oranje is the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who remains doubtful due to injury. If unavailable, Mark Flekken is expected to start in goal.

Japan arrive in the United States in excellent shape. Hajime Moriyasu's men have won six consecutive matches and have not conceded in their last five outings. Victories over England and Iceland during their recent preparations further demonstrated the team's growing confidence and tactical discipline. The Samurai Blue have steadily evolved into one of the strongest sides outside Europe and South America, with many key players competing at the highest level of club football.

The absence of captain Wataru Endo is a significant blow. His leadership, defensive awareness, and work rate in midfield have been central to Japan's success in recent years. Without him, the team may struggle to maintain the same level of protection in front of the back line against a technically gifted Dutch attack.

Japan's defensive organization should make this a competitive contest, but the Netherlands possess superior attacking talent and greater depth across the pitch. If Koeman's side can be more clinical in front of goal than they were in their recent friendlies, they have every chance of starting their World Cup campaign with a hard-earned victory.
