Mauritius take on the visitors Cameroon in the round 9 match of World Cup qualification in Africa. The match will be played on Wednesday, October 3st at Cote d'Or National Sports Complex (St Pierre).
Mauritius is not the kind of opponent expected to pull off miracles. The Dodos have occasionally made some noise in regional Indian Ocean tournaments, but at the continental level, their record is modest. Their only appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations came over half a century ago — back in 1974. And, unsurprisingly, the upcoming tournament will again take place without the perennial underdogs. Still, Mauritius managed to reach the current, decisive stage of qualification. Their realistic target now is simply to avoid finishing last. Fortunately, they have Eswatini in their group — the team against whom they picked up the majority of their five points, helping them stay confidently in the second-to-last position. In other matches, even securing a draw was considered a success. Even against that fellow underdog, they needed a 90+ minute goal to make it 3-3. Recently, Mauritius have been struggling defensively, conceding in nearly every game they’ve played this year. However, their attacking play has shown slight improvement, with goals scored in four of their last five competitive fixtures — a small but encouraging sign for the side.

Cameroon were the first African team to make a serious impact at the World Cup. Since that famous 1990 quarter-final run, they’ve only missed two global tournaments, but they haven’t reached the knockout stages in recent editions — including in Qatar, where they also failed to escape the group. At the AFCON, after earning bronze in 2021, they were eliminated in the round of 16 two years later. Their current campaign hasn’t been smooth either, as Cape Verde have emerged as surprise contenders. In the last round, Cameroon lost 0-1 to them after a decisive goal from Livramento. That defeat left them four points behind their rivals — 15 versus 19 — though it’s worth noting the group favorites were earlier held to a draw by modest Eswatini. Still, mathematically, Marc Brys’s men retain their chances to finish top and will fight for it until the very end. Cameroon’s attack remains dangerous, led by Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi, who continue to create plenty of chances. Yet, their inconsistency in defense has cost them valuable points — something they cannot afford against a low-ranked opponent like Mauritius.
So far, the Lions boast a perfect record against this opponent — five wins in five matches. Another slip-up could prove costly for the favorite. We recommend backing the visitors to win with a handicap of “-2.0 goals.”
Prediction for the match: Cameroon to win with -2.0 handicap.
