Mariehamn take on the visitors Haka in the round 16 match of Finnish Veikkausliiga. The match will be played on Monday, July 21st at Wiklöf Holding Arena (Mariehamn).
Mariehamn are not a club expected to achieve major success. The Green and Whites reached their peak in the mid-2010s. Having only become a fully professional team in 2009, they lifted their first trophy — the Finnish Cup — in 2015, and the following year won the national title. They’ve never come close to repeating that success, and in 2024 finished only 10th in the Veikkausliiga standings. This season, they’re performing at a similar level — modest, but far from disastrous. They’ve even managed to beat title contenders KuPS and recently drew tough away matches against Inter Turku and Jaro. With 16 points from 13 matches, Mariehamn currently sit in a relatively safe 8th place, showing some resilience in tight fixtures.
Haka are historically one of Finland’s more decorated clubs, though they haven’t added to their trophy haul since 2004–2005. In fact, they were relegated to Ykkönen in the past, though they eventually fought their way back to the top flight. Last season was quite decent — a 6th-place finish and a run to the final round of the Conference League playoffs, where they fell to SJK. But 2025 has brought a sharp downturn. After taking 7 points from their first 4 games, Haka have since won just twice and drawn twice in a string of mostly disappointing losses. Most recently, they suffered back-to-back defeats — at home to Inter Turku and away to Gnistan — and now sit 10th, only three points above the relegation zone.
Haka had a pair of wins and a draw in recent meetings, but in April they lost 0–1 at home to Mariehamn. The visitors may still look slightly stronger on paper, but given the circumstances and recent form, the Green and Whites are unlikely to lose this one.
Prediction for the match: Mariehamn not to lose (1X).
