Malmo take on the visitors Iberia 1999 in the second leg of UEFA Champions League Qualification round of 1/8-finals. First leg result: 3-1. The match will be played on Tuesday, July 15th at Eleda Stadion (Malmö).
Malmo have recently been regarded as the dominant force in Swedish football. Their latest championship title was secured in emphatic fashion, finishing ten points clear of their main rivals. They also featured in the main round of the Europa League, which, however, extended into January — right in the middle of the Scandinavian winter break. That unusual schedule may have disrupted their rhythm heading into the new season. Under coach Rydnström, who was expected to lead another title charge, the team instead got stuck in mid-table in the Allsvenskan and also lost a painful penalty shootout to Hacken in the cup. As a result, the focus has shifted toward making a strong showing in European competitions. They took a big step toward the next round with a dominant 3-1 away win in Tbilisi. The team looked composed and dangerous throughout, conceding only in the final minutes.

Iberia 1999 have reclaimed top status after rebranding. Previously known as Saburtalo, the club has had a short but successful history, including a league title and multiple cup wins. After changing their name, they returned to the summit last season by winning the Georgian league. The new domestic campaign, which began in spring, has also gone well — Iberia 1999 hit the summer break with a solid lead at the top, earning 44 points in 18 matches while main challenger Dila Gori sat six behind. With their league position relatively secure, all attention is now on the European stage. That might explain their poor showing in the Super Cup and the modest result in the first leg. Last week, they managed only a consolation goal late in the match. Their defense looked overwhelmed at times, particularly during Malmo’s first-half onslaught.
As a relatively young club, Iberia 1999 have never faced Malmo before. This marks their first-ever meeting with a Swedish opponent. The hosts only need a draw to advance. But with their superior squad and home support, back them to win with a -1.5 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: Malmo to win with -1.5 handicap.
