Malmö are determined to stay on top of Swedish football. The sky blues wrapped up last autumn with an 11-point cushion over their nearest rivals, securing their 24th Allsvenskan title overall — and their fourth since 2020. However, their start to the new campaign has been relatively slow, as is often the case for reigning champions who tend not to peak too early. It’s also worth noting that in late January, Malmö had to interrupt their pre-season to play a pair of UEFA Europa League fixtures. They opened the league with a couple of wins but were soon held to a pair of draws in April and have since alternated between victories and setbacks. ven against Värnamo they only managed a draw, although they did bounce back with a 3-0 thrashing of Halmstad.

AIK are one of Sweden’s most historic clubs, boasting 12 league titles — the first dating all the way back to 1900 — and 8 domestic cups. Their most recent championship came in 2018, but they’ve struggled to mount a serious title challenge since. Last season, they finished with the same number of points (54) as Hammarby but were relegated to third place on goal difference. This time, though, AIK made a strong start. Their only dropped points came in draws against reigning champions Malmö (0-0) and Conference League semi-finalists Djurgården (1-1), allowing them to take an early lead in the standings… But perhaps the pressure of being top has crept in, as they’ve since drawn against both Häcken and Hammarby.
