Mainz take on the visitors Hoffenheim in the round 11 match of German Bundesliga. The match will be played on Friday, November 21st at Mewa Arena (Mainz).
Mainz are showing two completely different faces. The Carnival Club were impressive last season. They collected 52 points, narrowly winning the battle for sixth place ahead of RB Leipzig and Werder. However, Stuttgart’s cup triumph meant this result sent them only to the Europa Conference League. Even so, after comfortably passing Rosenborg in the qualifiers (a 1–2 away loss in Norway followed by a 4–1 home win), the team showed a true German, serious approach to the competition: they defeated Omonia, Zrinjski and even Fiorentina. But domestically, it has been a complete failure. Stuttgart knocked them out of the cup, and in the Bundesliga they have recorded only one win so far (4–1 away at Augsburg), along with a couple of draws — leaving them in the relegation zone. The coaching staff certainly had plenty to think about during the international break. Their inconsistency has become a defining feature of the season, with strong European form sharply contrasting their league struggles. Some encouraging attacking displays suggest potential improvement, but defensive fragility continues to undermine their progress in Germany.

Hoffenheim finally showed positive signs in 2023/2024 after several difficult years. They even returned to European competition. But they failed to make much of an impact there, and their Bundesliga campaign was also underwhelming — although with their new coach, Ilzer, they at least finished in a safe 15th place with 32 points. This season, however, the situation in Sinsheim is very different: they are aiming for the Europa League at minimum. Initially, little went right for them at home. But a run of victories — four wins in the last four rounds — lifted them to sixth place right before the international break. At the same time, they crashed out of the cup in dramatic fashion: after a 2–2 draw with St. Pauli, they were eliminated in a long penalty shootout. Their strong momentum in the league suggests clear tactical progress and growing confidence. Hoffenheim have also shown efficiency in converting their chances, which has allowed them to climb the table rapidly despite early setbacks.
Mainz recorded three wins and one draw in 2023–2024. But in March they lost 0–2 away. It is logical to expect a revenge performance from the hosts — under these circumstances, they should be capable of winning at home.
Prediction for the match: Mainz to win.
