Mainz take on the visitors Borussia Dortmund in the round 13 match of German Bundesliga. The match will be played on Friday, December 5th at Mewa Arena (Mainz).
Mainz looked very solid for much of last season, staying within the leading quartet. But in the spring their form dropped noticeably, and they eventually finished in sixth place. Taking Stuttgart’s cup win into account, that result sent them to the Conference League. There, to be fair, they have looked good: they eliminated experienced Rosenborg in qualifying and started the main round with a victory. They did, however, lose 0–1 to Universitatea Craiova. Meanwhile, in the Bundesliga, Bo Henriksen’s side are collapsing completely. Crashing out of the cup is one thing, but their league win over Augsburg remained their only victory despite several draws. And in the previous round they suffered a heavy 0–4 defeat to Freiburg. Recent league results highlight Mainz’s growing defensive issues and their struggle to remain competitive across full 90 minutes. Even at home their performances have lacked stability, which has prevented them from turning promising spells into positive outcomes.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have revived after their coaching change. The Foals are certainly not without ambition. Even after finishing last season with 45 points in tenth place in the 2024/2025 campaign, Seoane kept his job over the summer. The Swiss coach was eventually dismissed after another winless start to the new season. His duties were handed to Polanski, the well-known former midfielder who had been working with the reserves. During the November international break Eugen received a full coaching contract, as the team’s improvement under him was clear. They thrashed Heidenheim, then earned a respectable 0–0 against strong RB Leipzig. But this week they surprisingly lost their cup match to St. Pauli — the end of a good run, or simply a case of letting go of another competition? Still, their league form has been noticeably steadier, with the team showing better organisation and control in recent fixtures. Their ability to avoid costly mistakes and maintain pressure throughout matches has helped them climb out of their early-season slump.
Mainz have not lost any of the last nine head-to-head meetings. They have won four times during this stretch, including an away victory in the spring. The hosts are given some respect, but it seems the visitors are capable of avoiding defeat against such an inconsistent opponent.
Prediction for the match: Borussia Monchengladbach not to lose (X2).
