Mainz could easily have been playing in a more prestigious European competition right now
The "Carnival Club" made clear progress last season in any case. But in some ways, they resembled Nottingham Forest — holding on among the leaders for a long time, only to collapse badly in the final stretch. Mainz have now scored seven goals in their last two games, showing that their attack is starting to click. At home, however, they remain inconsistent, with just two wins in their previous six Bundesliga fixtures.

Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League final in 2024. Yet it still led to farewells with coach Edin Terzić and long-serving veterans like Marco Reus and Mats Hummels. The gamble on Nuri Şahin was a clear failure, but replacement Niko Kovač managed to lift his squad to fourth place, edging out Mainz among others. Dortmund remain unbeaten in their last eight domestic matches, but their tendency to lose concentration late in games is a real concern. Away from home, they’ve conceded in every outing so far this season, which could be a factor again here.
In 2023, there were two straight draws, followed by back-to-back Mainz victories. But in March, Dortmund finally managed to win again at home. Dortmund are the stronger side and should prove it on the pitch — the bet is on an away win.
