Luzern take on the visitors Basel in the round 18 match of Swiss Super League. The match will be played on Wednesday, December 17th at Swissporarena (Luzern).
Lucerne are unimpressive this season. Lucerne are not among the domestic giants, and even at the national level they have been champions only once, and that was quite a long time ago. At the same time, in 2021 they managed to win the Swiss Cup after a long pause, and overall they have had several appearances on the European stage. Last season they were just one point short of qualifying at least for the Conference League: after a narrow defeat to Lausanne, the team finished only 6th. At the moment, the only relatively positive results have come in the cup, where the opposition has been weak so far. That is why Zug were beaten convincingly 4–1 there. In the league, however, the results are worse than in 2024/2025. In the previous round against Young Boys, Lucerne suffered another defeat, this time 0–2. The overall form looks unstable, with points being dropped regularly even against well-known opponents. At home and away, Lucerne have struggled to show consistency, which clearly affects their league position.

Basel unexpectedly managed to win the Super League in the spring after an eight-year break. On top of that, they also added the cup trophy. However, now they are very far from repeating even part of that “golden double.” Of course, this is largely connected with the forced change of head coach in the summer. The only realistic chance for silverware may come in the less prestigious cup format. Even so, the first setback already came in August, when Basel were knocked out immediately in the Champions League qualifiers after losing to Copenhagen. Defeats continued in the Europa League, especially away from home, although they at least managed to win their home matches. Against Aston Villa, however, they lost in the most recent round. In the Swiss championship as well, the title holders are dropping too many points. They also failed to impress against Lausanne, finishing with a goalless draw at home. Overall, the recent results suggest a noticeable decline compared to last season’s standards. Basel are still competitive, but their performances lack the dominance they showed during the title run.
In the first half of the year, Basel, who were on their way to a double, recorded two wins and one draw in three head-to-head matches. However, in September they lost 1–2, and that defeat came at home. This is the kind of opponent that the champion should beat even away from home, so we will trust Basel to get the job done.
Prediction for the match: Basel to win.
