Liverpool take on the visitors Chelsea in the round 36 match of English Premier League. The match will be played on Saturday, May 9th at Anfield, Liverpool.
Liverpool could once again be heading toward a managerial change. “The Reds” brought an end to the long and memorable era of Jürgen Klopp in 2024. Many feared life after Klopp, but Arne Slot surprised everyone by confidently winning the Premier League title. After that triumph, the Dutchman received major reinforcements in the summer, but most of the newcomers — especially Isak — failed to deliver at their new club, while Mohamed Salah and several other leaders became only shadows of themselves compared to the championship-winning campaign. Liverpool have looked slightly sharper in recent weeks, especially at Anfield, where their intensity and pressing have started to resemble last season’s standards again. Even so, inconsistency remains a major issue, and dropped points against direct rivals continue to hurt their ambitions. As a result, the Merseyside club crashed out of every competition, while in the league they fell behind the top two and even risked finishing outside the top five altogether. Still, they managed to improve their form in the spring. Against Manchester United FC, however, after a couple of victories, they still suffered a defeat — losing 2-3 at Old Trafford.

Chelsea were forced into a new era after ownership passed from Roman Abramovich to American investors. After making a series of mistakes early on, the new hierarchy seemed to learn their lesson by appointing Enzo Maresca two summers ago. The Italian guided the team to 4th place in the Premier League, while also winning the UEFA Europa Conference League and later the Club World Cup. Chelsea’s away form has become especially concerning lately, with the team struggling badly whenever opponents manage to disrupt their rhythm early in matches. Confidence also appears fragile, as several recent setbacks have quickly turned into damaging losing streaks. However, tensions between the board and the manager continued to grow, eventually leading to Maresca’s dismissal around New Year. His replacement, Liam Rosenior, lasted less than four months, managing to lose a League Cup semi-final, a Champions League playoff tie, and then overseeing a string of Premier League defeats in the spring. Against Leeds United in the cup, Chelsea — already without Liam — still scraped through with a narrow 1-0 victory to reach the final, where they will soon face Manchester City FC. But after that came another defeat against Nottingham Forest FC, and this time there was hardly even a chance for a draw, as they lost 1-3 at home.
Since 2021, the Merseyside club had somehow managed to avoid defeat in this fixture. However, last year it was “The Blues” who won back-to-back meetings. Both clubs have seriously disappointed this season, especially compared to the previous campaign. Still, Liverpool are playing at home, and it is worth backing the reigning champions to take the victory here.
Prediction for the match: Liverpool to win.
