Levante take on the visitors Barcelona in the round 2 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Saturday, August 23rd at Estadi Ciutat de València (Valencia).
Levante are a modest project. Yet from 2004 to 2022 they spent most of their time in La Liga. They even had a fine European debut in 2012/2013, reaching the round of 16 in the Europa League. A couple of years ago, however, they had to drop down to Segunda after finishing second from bottom. Failing to bounce straight back (3rd place and playoff disappointment), they slipped to 8th the following year. But last season Julián Calero’s men looked much stronger, finishing as champions. Naturally, everyone realized how difficult it would be for a newcomer at a level they had not seen in a while. They opened away against Alavés, equalized after the break thanks to star signing Tolyan, only to concede in stoppage time for a 1-2 defeat. Levante’s squad still looks competitive, with a mix of Segunda leaders and experienced additions, but the defensive line remains a concern. Their ability to adapt quickly will determine whether they can avoid another relegation battle.

Barcelona climbed to the top — and will try to stay there. The "Blaugrana", under Xavi last year, ended the season without silverware. There were doubts whether Hansi Flick, making his debut in Spanish football, could raise the team’s level — especially with ongoing registration issues and the injury to reliable Marc-André ter Stegen. Yet largely thanks to the progress of young stars led by Lamine Yamal (benefiting from Xavi’s previous trust), Barcelona produced an almost perfect season. The only disappointment came in the Champions League, where experienced Inter knocked them out. Domestically, though, they consistently beat Real Madrid in all competitions. This summer again brought questions about registering newcomers like Eric García and Marcus Rashford, while Nico Williams ultimately refused a move. Íñigo Martínez left for the Middle East, with La Masia talents expected to step up in his place. Against Mallorca they opened with a 3-0 rout, though the opponent suffered two red cards. Barcelona’s attacking form looks sharp, and Flick’s pressing system already seems well integrated. If they maintain their defensive discipline, another title challenge looks very realistic.
In the last five meetings, the "more than a club" side has given their modest opponent just one draw alongside four wins. A champion against a newcomer — the only question is how long Yamal and company will keep scoring freely. A handicap bet of "-1.5 goals" looks logical.
Prediction for the match: Barcelona to win with -1.5 handicap.
