Leganes take on the visitors Huesca in the round 40 match of Spanish LaLiga2. The match will be played on Monday, May 18th at Estadio Municipal de Butarque (Leganes).
Leganes were arguably the biggest underachievers in Spanish football — if not in all of Europe — a year ago. After earning promotion to La Liga, they still managed to collect a respectable 40 points. Yet even that was not enough, as the team was relegated back to the second division after losing the battle for 17th place. It seems they have never truly recovered from that blow. Their results in Segunda have been far too modest from the outset. And once the decisive spring rounds arrived, things became outright depressing. Most matches ended in defeat, with the only exception being a 2-1 home win over Albacete. Leganés have looked particularly fragile in recent weeks, with confidence clearly evaporating as pressure has increased. Their inability to grind out even draws in difficult moments has become one of the defining themes of this run-in. Last round, they faced one of the promotion contenders, Racing, so the eventual 1-2 defeat surprised no one. But that result extended their losing streak to four consecutive matches.

Huesca are also involved in a difficult survival battle. The Oscenses have reached La Liga before, but never managed to establish themselves there. A year ago, there were hopes of at least breaking into the top six and continuing the fight, but they fell just short, finishing 8th with 64 points. Now, something like that is out of the question. Losing more than half of their matches, the team has slid into a basic fight just to remain in Segunda. Since the end of February, they went a long time without a single victory, only finally beating Zaragoza 1-0 at home in late April. Huesca’s recent performances suggest a side struggling badly with both consistency and composure when matches become tense. Even against weaker opposition, they have found it difficult to impose themselves or control the tempo of the game. After that came a 2-4 defeat away to Racing. Against Real Sociedad B, they were unconvincing again, conceding once in each half and only replying with a single goal in stoppage time, meaning they never had a realistic chance even to salvage a draw — and that came at home against a newly promoted relegation-threatened side.
In the head-to-head meetings, the Green-Whites won the first two encounters, while the last two matches ended in draws. Both clubs are weak, and it is no coincidence that with each passing round they move closer to relegation. Still, home advantage matters in matches like this — against an opponent of this level, Leganes should be winning, and we’ll back them to do exactly that.
Prediction for the match: Leganes to win.
