Lazio take on the visitors Inter in the round 36 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Saturday, May 9th at Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Lazio were arguably the unluckiest underachievers in Italian football last season. First, they lost 6th place to ACF Fiorentina despite finishing level on points, and then, because of Bologna FC 1909 winning the cup, they did not even qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League. In the summer, Maurizio Sarri returned to the capital and already justified that decision by guiding his side to their first cup final since 2019, knocking out AC Milan, Bologna — the defending cup holders — and then Atalanta BC on penalties in the semi-finals. Lazio have looked much sharper at home lately, especially in matches where they were forced to play proactively from the opening minutes. Their attacking football has become more fluid in recent weeks, even if defensive mistakes still continue to cost them points. In Serie A, however, results remained mediocre, although they did improve somewhat during the spring. Against Udinese Calcio they could only manage a draw, but they did beat modest newcomers US Cremonese, albeit only 2-1.

Inter Milano managed to avoid repeating last season’s disappointing finish. Back then, “The Nerazzurri” fell short in every competition they participated in, despite fighting for trophies almost until the very end everywhere. After the humiliating 0-5 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain FC in the UEFA Champions League final, Simone Inzaghi left the club, although it became clear he had already arranged everything before that final. Cristian Chivu also endured several painful setbacks, starting with elimination at the Club World Cup in the summer, while in winter his side lost the Supercoppa Italiana and were twice beaten by modest FK Bodø/Glimt in the first knockout round of the Champions League. Inter have regained momentum at exactly the right moment and now look far more confident in decisive matches than they did earlier in the campaign. Their recent results suggest the team are once again capable of controlling games through experience and composure rather than sheer intensity. Now, though, his team are pushing for a domestic double. After recovering from 0-2 down, they beat Como 1907 in the decisive second-leg cup semi-final. At the same time, after overcoming their poor run during the first half of spring, they increased their lead over the chasing pack in Serie A. They did stumble against Torino FC in the penultimate round, but their rivals were not impressive either, so victory over Parma Calcio 1913 allowed them to secure the return of the Scudetto ahead of schedule.
In the last seven meetings between the sides, the Romans managed only two draws, while all the remaining matches were won by “The Nerazzurri”. At this point there is little reason for the visitors to play cautiously anymore. Backing both teams to score looks like the best option here.
