Lazio take on the visitors Inter in the final match of Coppa Italia. The match will be played on Wednesday, May 13th at Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Lazio understand that this is the only place where they can still save their season. “The Eagles” are traditionally considered one of Italy’s major clubs, although truly significant success has come only sporadically. Their last notable breakthrough was a second-place finish under Maurizio Sarri, which explains why the club turned back to him after missing out on European football last year, losing sixth place to ACF Fiorentina on goal difference despite finishing level on points. However, Sarri has not managed to produce any meaningful progress in Serie A — if anything, the opposite has happened. Lazio’s domestic inconsistency has become a recurring issue, with the team struggling to build momentum even against sides they would normally be expected to beat. At the same time, their home performances in knockout football have often looked far more focused, suggesting they still view cup competition as their best chance for redemption. A recent draw against Udinese Calcio underlined those problems, and although they predictably defeated US Cremonese, they were then crushed 0-3 by this very opponent in the league last weekend. That made cup success even more important, especially considering the level of opposition they had to overcome: first AC Milan, then 2025 title holders Bologna FC 1909, and finally Atalanta BC, who were considered favorites in the tie but were eliminated on penalties after two draws, 2-2 and 1-1.

Inter were arguably the biggest underachievers in Italian — perhaps even all European — football a year ago, losing decisive matches across multiple competitions, capped by the humiliating 0-5 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in the UEFA Champions League final. After that, Simone Inzaghi was replaced by Cristian Chivu, whose tenure also began with setbacks — first at the FIFA Club World Cup, then in the Italian Super Cup. Inter’s response over the past few months has been impressive, with the team rediscovering the ruthless efficiency that had briefly gone missing during the spring wobble. Even after securing the title, their performances have remained sharp, which suggests motivation and confidence are still very much intact rather than fading after achieving their primary objective. There were a few disappointing results in Serie A during the spring, and it briefly looked as though last season’s late collapse in the Scudetto race might repeat itself. But this time, Inter regained momentum, started winning again, and pulled clear of the chasing pack. Victory in Parma officially secured the return of the Scudetto, which explains why they then dismantled Lazio so convincingly with no league pressure left. In the Coppa Italia, however, it was not all straightforward — only Venezia FC were handled comfortably. Torino FC were edged out narrowly, 2-1, while against Como 1907, after a draw in the first semi-final, Inter trailed 0-2 before turning it around in the final 25–30 minutes.
Before last weekend’s meeting, the Nerazzurri had recorded six wins and two draws in the previous eight encounters. Perhaps it will not be another rout like in Serie A, but Inter look well placed to win again.
Prediction for the match: Inter to win.
