Lazio take on the visitors Como in the round 21 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Monday, January 19th at Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Lazio were runners-up not so long ago. In the spring, they lost the battle for sixth place to Fiorentina, despite finishing level on points, and ended up completely without European competition. It is no surprise that the club decided to bring Sarri back as head coach, under whom they once finished second. So far, however, it looks like a classic case of “you can’t step into the same river twice.” Aside from the cup, where they managed to eliminate Milan, there have been few positives to highlight. In the league, the capital club have not improved at all and are instead sliding toward the middle of the table. At least Verona were beaten in the last round, but even there everything was decided by an own goal that led to the only goal in the 79th minute. Overall, Lazio’s recent form in Serie A remains unconvincing, with too many dropped points against modest opposition. The lack of consistency continues to prevent them from building momentum and climbing back toward the top positions.

Como have been surprising for more than one year now. The Islanders finally played in Serie A last season. Despite a solid financial base provided by the current owners, this newcomer was viewed skeptically: like many similar projects, they signed plenty of players, most of them past their peak, and appointed an inexperienced head coach. In the end, however, they finished in the top ten with 49 points. This season, instead of struggling with the “second-season syndrome,” they are fighting for European places. Until winter they suffered just one defeat, although December brought more setbacks, mainly against giants like Inter and Roma, after which wins followed again. At the moment, though, it is fair to speak about a slight downturn. First, they failed to beat Pisa, settling for a draw against a newly promoted outsider, and in the latest match they lost to Bologna. Still, Como’s overall results remain impressive, especially considering their recent history. Even during this dip, they continue to compete well in most matches and rarely look out of place.
The first three head-to-head meetings were won by Lazio. However, last year saw a draw, followed by the long-awaited first victory for Como. Both teams tend to play pragmatically, so a high-scoring game is unlikely. The pick here is under 2.5 total goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 2.5 scored goals.
