Lazio take on the visitors AC Milan in the round 1/8-finals of Coppa Italia. The match will be played on Thursday, December 4th at Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Lazio not long ago secured second place in Serie A — matching their best result of the century. After that, however, they declined rather quickly and noticeably, to the point where they are currently not playing in European competitions at all. In the 2024/2025 season they were also unlucky: they finished level on 65 points with Fiorentina, but the Viola were placed higher, in sixth, due to tiebreakers. And then Bologna went on to win the domestic cup… To pull the team out of the slump, Sarri was brought back to Rome. His start was quite difficult, but things improved in the autumn as they strengthened their position. Only Inter, in November, managed to break that encouraging run. After the break they secured a confident 2–0 against Lecce. And in the previous round, against Milan, they failed to respond to the visitors’ only goal. Despite the setbacks, Lazio have shown better organisation in their recent matches, maintaining compact play and creating more structured attacks. Their home performances have also become more consistent, which has helped them stay competitive even in tighter fixtures.

Milan have also reunited with a coach who was once successful here. Under Pioli, the Rossoneri even lifted the Scudetto, but in 2024, after finishing runners-up, the management decided to change direction. The result was a complete failure from Paulo Fonseca, and even Sérgio Conceição — who began brilliantly by beating Juventus and Inter and winning the Super Cup — ended up disappointing across all competitions, exiting early from the Champions League, dropping to eighth in Serie A, and losing the cup final to Bologna. In the summer, Allegri returned to San Siro… and lost his very first official match there, 1–2 to Cremonese. But the team then managed to seriously challenge for the top positions. The number of draws, however, remains a problem. In November they even dropped points against Parma, wasting a 2–0 lead and allowing the opponent to come back to 2–2. They did win the derby against Inter thanks to a single goal, and later repeated a similar scenario at home against their current opponent in the league. Milan’s recent form shows a team capable of controlling long stretches of matches, often dictating tempo even in tight contests. Their ability to avoid defeats in difficult away fixtures has also kept them firmly within reach of the leaders.
After three consecutive victories for the Rossoneri, last season Lazio took four out of a possible six points in this matchup. The visitors remain the favourites. But in any case, we do not expect a high-scoring match — the bet is on under 2.5 total goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 2.5 scored goals.
