Juventus take on the visitors Borussia Dortmund in the round 1 match of UEFA Champions League group stage. The match will be played on Tuesday, September 16th at Allianz Stadium (Turin).

That match fully met the hype, and the hosts edged it 4-3 with a last-gasp winner in the 90+ minute. Juventus have now won four of their last five matches in all competitions, showing signs of consistency. Their attack has been sharp too, averaging over two goals per game in that stretch.

Borussia Dortmund have looked very similar to their upcoming European opponent in 2024/25. They also miscalculated by hiring a young coach last summer. Though Nuri Şahin grew up at the club as a player, he disappointed as a manager. A change helped here as well — Niko Kovač replaced the Turk and lifted the side to 4th in the Bundesliga, which had seemed nearly impossible… Only to also lose in the FIFA Club World Cup playoffs to Real Madrid! Overall, things seemed fairly solid, but in the first league match against St. Pauli, they led before a red card ruined it and they only drew, conceding twice late on. Still, they bounced back with confident wins over Rot-Weiss Essen in the cup and Union Berlin in the league. And after the break they secured another solid 2-0 victory over Heidenheim, though even Kovač admitted it became easier after the opponent’s sending-off. Borussia have been strong offensively, scoring in eight straight matches. However, their defensive lapses remain an issue, with clean sheets coming rarely.
The clubs have faced each other since 1993, with the Italians winning four of the first five meetings and drawing the other. But afterward it has been even, with three wins each. “The Old Lady” are seen as the slight favorite at home. But it definitely won’t be dull — expect “over 2.5 total goals.”
