Inter Miami take on the visitors Porto in the round 2 match of FIFA Club World Cup. The match will be played on Thursday, June 19th at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta, GA).
Inter Miami hope to capitalize on playing close to home. The Herons are a relatively new addition to North American football, but from the moment the project launched in Florida — with David Beckham at the helm — expectations were sky-high. To turn vision into reality, the club brought in Lionel Messi along with a group of former Barcelona teammates. However, in terms of tangible success, results have been mixed. Aside from winning the Leagues Cup — a tournament few had prioritized before — their main achievement was finishing first in the 2023 MLS regular season. But that run ended abruptly with a first-round playoff exit. In 2024, under Javier Mascherano, the team showed flashes of promise in the CONCACAF Champions Cup before being outclassed in the semifinals by Vancouver Whitecaps. A dip in MLS form followed, though recent performances hinted at recovery. Their Club World Cup debut saw them grind out a 0-0 draw against Al Ahly, with Óscar Ustari saving a crucial penalty from Trezeguet.

Porto not only failed to reclaim the Primeira Liga title last season — they fell well short of Lisbon rivals Benfica and Sporting. Though Sérgio Conceição ended his tenure with a domestic cup win, it wasn’t enough to retain his job, and even the long-standing club president was replaced by André Villas-Boas. Ironically, the new president famously won the Super Cup decades ago as a young coach… but his return so far has brought little success. The coaching change also failed to yield improvements. Porto finished third once again in the league, were eliminated early in domestic cups, and exited the Europa League in February after losing to a resurgent Roma. The Club World Cup presents a last chance at redemption. They opened the tournament with a goalless draw against Palmeiras, showing defensive organization but lacking attacking bite.
While Messi and some of his teammates are very familiar with Porto from their European days, this will be the first-ever meeting between Inter Miami and the Portuguese side. Porto come in as clear favorites, but both sides have shown caution in attack. Expect another low-scoring affair — back under 3.0 total goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 3.0 scored goals.
